Why is it such a big deal to have a sick day bag?
People ask me this on a daily basis. Having diabetes or any kind of chronic illness, affects every minute of every day. It makes us feel very out of control at times. The only way to be ready for any kind of emergency is to be prepared, and prevent it. Easier said than done. Most of us have a spare tire in the car, incase of a flat. We may have a backpack on an hike incase we need it. We also pay for insurance for those “just in case” situations. Your sick day bag is the same thing.
Having had Type 1 diabetes most of my life, I know that being active, going on adventure, having a family, running errands, and working all the time, your blood sugars “pop and drop” multiple times during the day. I’ve been in a hurry before going to work, dropped the kids at school and rushed into the hospital in time to slam my badge into the time clock. Shoot! I forgot to take my morning meds, or forgot my insulin pump supplies, now I’m stuck. I can’t function because my BP is climbing fast because it’s a Monday. Once my insulin pump is empty, my blood sugar will climb very fast because I need to eat (as a nurse we burn it off fast), work can be stressful which increases my blood sugar, and I don’t have a refill on insulin, so I can’t just run to the pharmacy to get more. I’d like to think I’m very organized, but sometimes stuff happens.
